Allen Gee
Greenville, Georgia
Allen Gee lives in rural Meriwether County at the location of the former Gordy Pottery. Working in this historical environment has shaped his appreciation and perspective of mid-twentieth century potters, who adapted their methods to evolving technology and changing customer preferences.
Gee creates stoneware from clays he mixes in Georgia. His glazes are derived from local minerals and materials, including gneiss-hornblende stone, wood ashes, ground glass, and feldspar. His pottery is fired in a wood-burning kiln that reaches temperatures of about 2,350°F, hot enough to melt the homemade glazes and vitrify the clay.
His interest in pottery began with a ceramics course in college, followed by two years working as a production potter in Macon. Using Georgia’s natural clay and minerals continues to inspire his creative process.
Born in Statesboro, Georgia, Gee grew up in a rural farming community and spent summers helping with the tobacco harvest on his grandfather’s farm. He served in the Navy before attending Georgia Southern University, where he earned a degree in Industrial Arts Education.
His goal is to produce pottery that people will both use and enjoy.
