We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dean Swanson on October 16, 2026, whose vision, generosity, and commitment to our community helped shape the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia into what it is today.
Alongside his beloved wife, Kay, Dean was the founding patron of the Folk Pottery Museum. Together, they envisioned the museum, led and funded its construction, donated the collection that became the foundation of our exhibits, and established an endowment to support its ongoing operations. Their belief in the importance of preserving and celebrating the folk pottery traditions of Northeast Georgia made the museum possible.
Dean also served three years as President of the Sautee-Nacoochee Community Association and was a valued and respected member of our community. His generosity extended well beyond the museum, touching many lives and strengthening the place we are fortunate to call home.
Dean's legacy will continue through his sons, Stewart and Chris Swanson, who serve as Co-Chairs of the Folk Pottery Museum's Trustees. Like their parents, they are dedicated to championing the folk pottery community of Northeast Georgia and ensuring that these traditions continue to be shared with future generations.
We are grateful for all that Dean and Kay have given to the museum and our community. Dean will be greatly missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Stewart, Chris, and the entire Swanson family.
Thank you, Dean, for believing in this museum and the people and traditions it celebrates. Your legacy lives on in every potter, every visitor, and every story shared here.
For those who would like to pay their respects to Dean, visitation will be held Tuesday, October 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Whitfield Funeral Home’s South Chapel, 1370 Industrial Blvd., Baldwin.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, October 21, at 2 p.m. at Cornelia United Methodist Church, 275 Wyly St., Cornelia. Interment with U.S. Air Force military honors will follow at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest.
